60th Annual Dinner and Dance

We marked our diamond anniversary with a glittering dinner and dance celebration, presenting players and supporters with a range of awards while also raising almost £3000 towards its pitch fund. Chairman Gary Jackson welcomed 122 players, friends and supporters to the Village Hotel in Maidstone – some travelling from as far as Aberdeen. This 60th season has seen promotion for the ladies first team while the club’s junior section goes from strength to strength. Awards were given to the following people:

  • Keith Hopkins Most Improved Young Men’s Player – Luc Debont
  • Jersey Trophy U21 Mens Player of the Year – Joel Divers
  • Roy Thomson Most Improved Young Ladies Player – Millie Midwinter-Lean
  • John Bloor Young Ladies Player – Meghan Smith
  • Adrian Kearney League Performance – Ladies 1st XI.
  • Malcolm Batchelor Individual League Performance – Sarah Hrebien
  • Ron Ashdown Individual Achievement Award – Mel Young
  • Phil Biggs Club Person – Cheryl McMillan
  • Les Phillips Club Personality – CJ Verrall
  • Martin Banfield Veteran Player – Denise Gray
  • Chairman’s Award – Richard Brewer

Gary explained why this milestone birthday year is so important: “Our astroturf pitch at Darland Avenue is 10 years old now and needs to be replaced; while we have been successful with some grants and lottery bids, we are still around £30,000 short of our target so we are fundraising in earnest. We may be considerably smaller than clubs such as Holcombe Park but we have a huge group of volunteers and supporters who help keep the club running and our junior section shows that hockey is still a popular sport for youngsters so we’re keen to make sure Gillingham has a club here for the next 60 years.”
